Dog hair: it’s on your clothes, your couch, and somehow even in your coffee. But if you love dogs and can’t stand the constant shedding, knowing which breeds are heavy shedders and which barely shed can save you from a never-ending battle with your vacuum. Whether you’re a neat freak or just prefer a little fur around the house, these breeds will help you find the best match for your lifestyle.

1. Siberian Husky – The Energetic Sled Dog

Siberian Huskies are not only strikingly beautiful with their thick, double coats, but they also shed a lot. These dogs are built for cold climates, which means their coats are designed to keep them warm. While they shed moderately all year long, twice a year, during shedding season, they’ll “blow” their coat in massive chunks. If you’re not ready to clean up fur constantly, these dogs might not be the best choice, but if you’re an active person, they can be the perfect companion for running or hiking.

2. Alaskan Malamute – The Powerful Arctic Companion

If you think Huskies shed a lot, Alaskan Malamutes will take shedding to a whole new level. These dogs are large and powerful, bred for hauling heavy loads in freezing temperatures. They have a thick, dense coat that sheds constantly, and when it’s time for their seasonal coat blowout, prepare for a mini snowstorm inside your house. Regular grooming is essential, but you’ll need a heavy-duty vacuum to keep up. Still, their loyalty and strength make them fantastic working dogs.

3. Golden Retriever – The Friendly Furball

Golden Retrievers are known for their friendly and outgoing personalities, but they’re also notorious for shedding. Their long, thick coats need regular brushing to prevent mats and tangles, but that doesn’t stop them from leaving fur everywhere. Goldens shed moderately year-round, and during the spring and fall, their shedding increases. However, their friendly nature and eagerness to please make them great family pets. Just keep a lint roller close by!

4. Labrador Retriever – The Fun-Loving Companion

Labrador Retrievers are another breed known for shedding. Their short, dense coats shed all year long, but the real problem comes during the seasonal changes when they shed heavily. Labs are active, loyal, and playful dogs that love to be with their families. While they may not leave as much fur behind as some long-haired breeds, their shedding is still enough to make you wish for a self-cleaning house. These friendly pups need plenty of exercise and enjoy playing, making them great companions for outdoor activities. However, don’t be surprised if you find fur all over your favorite chair after an afternoon of fetch.

5. German Shepherd – The Loyal Protector

German Shepherds are renowned for their intelligence and loyalty, often working as service dogs or in police and military roles. But their shedding habits are no joke. These dogs have double coats that shed consistently, with an even heavier shedding period in the spring and fall. Regular brushing helps control the fur, but their shedding can still overwhelm the cleanest of homes. Despite their fur, their trainability and protective nature make them one of the most popular breeds around. They’re highly intelligent and excel in obedience, which is great for active families. However, you’ll need to dedicate time to grooming to keep your home clean and your dog’s coat healthy.

6. Saint Bernard – The Gentle Giant

Saint Bernards are gentle giants that were originally bred to rescue people in the snowy Alps. With their thick coats, they are built to withstand the cold, but that also means they shed heavily. If you don’t mind a bit of mess, you’ll find that these dogs are incredibly affectionate and great with kids. Just be prepared for the constant shedding, and make sure you have a good vacuum to keep up with the fur. Saint Bernards are also known for their calm, easygoing demeanor, making them wonderful companions. They love to be part of the family and will happily curl up on the couch, leaving you with plenty of fur to clean.

7. Bernese Mountain Dog – The Majestic Furball

Bernese Mountain Dogs are known for their stunning tri-colored coats, but those coats come with a price. Their thick fur sheds year-round, especially in warmer climates, and regular grooming is necessary to keep their fur under control. These dogs are friendly, intelligent, and affectionate, making them great family pets. If you don’t mind a little extra hair, they’ll reward you with their loyalty and love. These dogs are also known for their gentle nature and tend to get along well with other pets and children. Just be sure you have the time and energy to manage their coat maintenance, especially during their shedding seasons.

8. Chow Chow – The Fluffy Lion

Chow Chows are one of the most distinctive-looking dogs with their thick, lion-like manes and aloof personalities. However, their dense, woolly coats shed heavily, and they require regular grooming to prevent their fur from taking over your home. While they may not be as cuddly as some other breeds, their independent nature and loyalty to their family make them an intriguing companion. Chow Chows can be a bit stubborn and require consistent training, but their calm and reserved demeanor makes them ideal for families looking for a low-energy dog. Just be prepared to spend some time keeping their coat looking its best.

Despite the shedding, Akitas are known for their protective instincts and make excellent family watchdogs. They are very independent and can sometimes be aloof with strangers, but they will always be fiercely loyal to their family. Make sure you’re ready for a breed that requires consistent grooming and training, especially during shedding season.

Corgis may be small, but they shed like much larger dogs. These adorable little pups have double coats that keep them warm, but also ensure that fur will be on every surface in your home. While their short stature and big personalities make them a favorite, be ready for frequent brushing and regular vacuuming to keep their shedding in check. Corgis are incredibly smart and easy to train, which makes them great companions. Their playful and friendly nature also means they’re fantastic with kids, making them the perfect family dog despite their shedding.

11. Newfoundland – The Gentle Water Dog

Newfoundlands are gentle giants with a thick, water-resistant coat that sheds continuously. Despite their size, these dogs are incredibly sweet and make great family pets. However, their constant shedding can be a challenge, and they tend to drool too, making them a bit of a double mess. But their calm demeanor and loyalty make them worth the extra cleaning effort. These dogs are also natural swimmers and excel in water-related activities, so if you live near a lake or beach, they’ll love to join you for a swim. Their loving and patient nature makes them fantastic with children.

12. Great Pyrenees – The Majestic Guardian

Great Pyrenees are majestic dogs with thick, white coats that shed constantly. While they’re beautiful and protective, their fur can become overwhelming if not regularly groomed. Their coats are designed to protect them from the elements, but in a warmer climate, it can feel like they’re shedding non-stop. Still, their gentle and calm nature makes them an excellent choice for families who can handle the grooming. Great Pyrenees are also known for their independent and sometimes stubborn nature, but they are incredibly protective and devoted to their family. Be ready to spend time caring for their thick coats, especially during shedding seasons.
