Crumbs, the world’s fattest cat, has passed away just weeks after beginning a weight loss journey at a specialized veterinary clinic in Perm, Russia. Known in Russian as “Kroshik,” the 38-pound cat had gone viral after being rescued from a hospital basement, where he spent years munching on scraps like biscuits and soup, leading to his unusually hefty size.

Crumbs’ caretakers at the Matroskin Cat Shelter were determined to help him live a healthier life. Under a strict diet and exercise program that included sessions on an underwater treadmill, Crumbs managed to shed 7 pounds in a short time. However, despite early successes, the feline suddenly developed breathing issues and passed away on Saturday.

Galiana More, who manages the shelter where Crumbs was being treated, explained that the cat’s extensive layers of fat had hidden cancerous tumors on his spleen and other organs, which likely contributed to multiple organ failure. Crumbs’ official cause of death remains undetermined, pending a post-mortem examination. “It will be difficult to say if his weight or the hidden tumors were the direct cause,” More said, emphasizing the challenges in diagnosing overweight animals with such conditions.

Crumbs’ journey had become a symbol of hope for many who followed his progress, as he worked to overcome his size and health challenges. “This is a great loss for us,” More expressed. “We truly wanted to share only good news about his progress, but sometimes, despite the best efforts, miracles don’t happen.”

The Matroskin team shared their sorrow in a statement, saying, “Sometimes even the strongest cats cannot cope, and sometimes even the best care isn’t enough. We’re grateful to everyone who supported Crumbs and were there for him until his very last breath.”

Crumbs, who could not walk due to his weight, will be remembered for his spirit and resilience, touching hearts around the world during his brief but inspiring journey toward health.
